My dear Lewes
I was greatly pleased to hear from Simpson that there was something due to you on our old transaction The Physiology of Common Life. In 1862 we paid you for all the Stock on hand as you will see by statement rendered at that time. Since then we have reprinted odds and ends of numbers to make complete sets of the book and inclosed cheque £66.5.9 pays for them as per accompanying statement. We have about a thousand complete copies on hand which move slowly.
Mr. Langford, I doubt not, keeps you well posted as to sales of Daniel and they are I think most satisfactory and Books two and three keep so well up with Book one. I confess however that I expected more of a spirt in sale but I think the closing scene of Book Four, I mean the Jewel scene, will set all the world talking. There is immense puzzlement as to what the author is going to make of Gwendolen, which is a good thing and none are more sorely baffled than the Newspaper critics.
While writing to you it occurs to me that I did not reply to Mrs. Lewes' last pleasant letter but I do not think there was any point requiring an answer. However I shall write to her very soon.
We had three lovely warm days but today it has gone back to East wind and snow.
