My Dear Mrs. Lewes
Willie is away with his Light Horse up about Dundee so may have omitted to tell you that Simpkins having ordered 100 more Theophrastus last week, all doubt about reprinting was removed and another 500 put in hand at once.
I inclose a table of Sales of your works from January 1 to June 30, which I suppose it was intended that I should send on to you and at all events it will not be unrefreshing for you to look at it. We shall send you a cheque for Theophrastus at the beginning of October or sooner if you should wish any of it.
The weather is so far better and I earnestly hope that you are well enough to drive out. Strange to say with better weather I have not been quite so well again, but it is nothing and I daresay I had been walking rather much. Today I expect to be fit for my round of the
Links again, walking not playing. Oliphant writes to me from our embassy at Constantinople. He has been all over Syria and Palestine and sends me some of the first fruits in a M.S. article to be followed by others and also by a book. 309 You and he and Disraeli are all I fancy working to one end.
I had a long letter from Hamley too lately who had fallen [in] with Oliphant when dining at the Embassy on the Bosphorus. Hamley has been acting as our chief commissioner in settling the boundaries of Roumania and Turkey according to the Treaty of Berlin. They have succeeded beyond expectation. . . .
