My Dear George Eliot
I am perfectly delighted with the opening of the new story. The wealth of illustration and thought is wonderful and the lifelike minute delineation of character could not well be surpassed.
No part in these first 110 pages amused me more than the fellow giving his advice to the Miller about a tutor for his son. 162 Before I came to your explanation I had made up my mind that the man had no immediate object to serve by his earnest unscrupulous advice. I have met with this sort of thing hundreds of times.
You may go ahead with perfect confidence that St. Oggs on the Floss or Maggie will be a grand success. My expectations were very highly raised but these opening chapters really go beyond them.
I propose coming to see you on Thursday or Saturday and will then bring the M.S. Let me know which of those days will suit you best.
