April 8/79.
My dear Mrs. Lewes.
I am glad to [have] received your letter and to hear that you have reconciled yourself to the publication of Theophrastus before the end of May. I shall write to Mr. Harper and it will give me great pleasure if I can save you any trouble in such negotiations, especially if I can do so successfully in a business point of view for you. In the mean time I think from what you say it will be better to do nothing about translation into German and not to allow Tauchnitz to reprint unless he offers something very considerable. He could bring it out very cheap and it is a sort of book the English would buy abroad, particularly for the Indian market. You have not returned the Title-page or mentioned the form of advertisement you would like. At present I do not propose to stereotype but to begin with a moderate edition say two thousand and to keep the type standing. 215 We could reprint quickly enough to meet any demand.
Thanks for your kind messages about my health which I quite appreciate; indeed it was to please my wife that I had the second wise doctor here. Our weather has gone back again a little but I hope it will be fine enough for Musselburgh tomorrow. Hamley 216 is away to Bulgaria where he is to be our chief commissioner as to boundary, but I do not see what we can do. Kinglake has nearly finished his new volume. It tells of the Winter Troubles before Sebastopol. It is strangely fascinating reading. My Nephew reports delightful weather in London and I earnestly hope that you are taking advantage of it by being out of doors as much as possible. 217 Since I became an invalid I have felt nothing do me much good except the open air.
