My Dear Sir
I inclose the first 16 pages of the Reprint. In looking over the proof the impressions first made upon me by each turn of phrase come so vividly before me that I can hardly believe a twelvemonth to have slipped away since I sate eagerly reading the M.S.
I think it wisest to print a short number but do not let that discourage you. No man can approach to anything like an accurate idea of the probable demand for a book when there are no previous data to go upon, and it is best to err upon the safe side. We shall also be able to keep a large portion of the Type standing so that we will be ready to meet an extended demand very quickly.
You may rely upon my doing the best I can for you, and I should be bitterly chagrined if I thought anyone could fairly do better. The proofs will now follow fast on each other.
What of the new Tale? I shall miss you much each month.
