My Dear Sir
I hope you have got your copy of the Magazine and find Janet correctly printed in all respects. 914 Your letters always give me much pleasure, and I wish I could overcome my habitual disinclination to letter writing so as to give myself a fair claim to more frequent communications from you.
As yet of course I have no means of judging how Janet is going to take with the public, but I have no doubt as to the power, ability, and lifelike character of the sketches in Part 1. That too many of the harsher elements of character are painted without relief in this part I still think, but I feel perfectly confident that the continuation of the Story will cause my objections to disappear altogether. The temptations to idleness in this hot weather in Jersey must be very great; nevertheless I hope to see a batch of M.S. very soon.
In the meantime I have the pleasure of paying into Lewes' account with the Union Bank £27 in acknowledgment of Janet Part 1. As I write to Lewes along with this I trust that you will excuse the brevity of this note.
