My Dear Mrs. Lewes
I inclose some memoranda of Middlemarch Book III which show that there is a pleasing movement going on although not so rapid as one could wish.
Mr. Langford has not said anything for some time as to the sale of Books 1 and 2 so I do not know how they are going on.
If Lewes is ever in the City tell him to look in at 37 P.N. Row and L. will show him how the movement is. I hope to see you next week as we intend to be in London on Wednesday 8th May. We are going abroad and taking our daughter with us and only intend to be a few days in London. We mean to go to Vienna and Trieste, then home by North of Italy and Switzerland. I do not know whether my daughter or her mother are most excited. This week is the "May Meeting" at St. Andrews, and we go over to Strathtyrum this afternoon. It is not an Exeter Hall meeting, but one of jolly golfers. I am obliged to go as Captain, but I am anything but averse to the road as it is great fun and the place will be looking lovely.
I took the liberty of giving a note of introduction to you to Mrs. Chetwynd 515 who is anxious to throw herself at your feet. She is a pleasant, accomplished woman and I hope you will excuse the liberty. Also I was so long in answering her note that I think she may have left London before she got my reply. I cannot recollect the name of what she has written.
