My Dear Madam
I inclose a letter which came today. From the stamp on the back I am in hopes that the letter may announce a present from the appreciating proprietor of the Fabrique D'Horlogerie.
I think the announcement of The Mill on the Floss looks very captivating. Proofs will be up to you soon now. Let me know whether you would like a good batch at a time or to have them sheet by sheet.
We are not making the space between the lines any closer than in Adam but are going a line or two more in the page. 461 I got Lewes' obliging note about the Tom Jones paper, which I have reluctantly postponed for a month, but the subject is not of a day.
The paper which chiefly interfered with Tom was that on Fleets and Navies by Capt. C. Hamley, 462 who had been unwell and I did not expect him; however by a great effort he had got it done. You should read that paper; it strikes me as wonderfully good even to the unprofessional reader, and naval men tell me they have seen nothing on the subject so sound as these papers.
I hope you are getting on merrily.
