My Dear Mrs. Lewes
I enclose Telegram received to-day from Mr. Harper which is I think very satisfactory and I send him by this mail the sheets of Theophrastus. I send you a copy of what I wrote to him, of which I hope you will approve. If I had attempted to give him more of an idea of the Book I must have slipped into criticism to which I did not feel equal and I was determined not to mislead him.
In one of your letters you mentioned that there were some thoughts you wished particularly to bring out and I should like much to have some of these guiding hints from you when you have leisure to write. We have written to our Australian friend who has agent in this country but have not yet heard in reply.
The weather continues very trying but I have resolved to go to Strathtyrum for a week at the end of the month and I have felt better and stronger ever since I came to that resolution so I do not think there can be much the matter with me. After we have been at Strathtyrum we propose to go to London for a short time.
I hope you are continuing to be able to get out into the country and are picking up some strength. Many people inquire how you are and all in a nice spirit of anxious sympathy.
The telegraphic news from Africa has been coming in all day. In the main the intelligence is satisfactory but there is heavy loss to ourselves and no satisfaction in killing these savages.
