Text: Copy in Blackwood Letter Book. Hitherto unpublished.
George Str. Edinburgh | April 22nd 1879.
My Dear Mrs. Lewes
In Mr. Lewes' note sending the M.S. of Theophrastus he mentioned 10/6 as price of volume so we considered that settled, and it looks the natural price for such a volume in this country.
Since I wrote to you I have changed the first impression from two thousand to three thousand as I think the first demand should go beyond 2000 and I hope it may exceed the larger number. While the selling price is 10/6 we propose to pay you by a lordship of 3/- on every copy sold reckoned 25 as 24. I hope this offer which is in proportion with our recent arrangements for your works will meet your ideas but if not we shall be happy to meet your wishes by any other arrangement you may fancy.
My nephew joins me in best wishes and I write separately as to other matters connected with the work.
always yours truly
