July 15/67.
My Dear Madam
I inclose an order for Two Thousand One hundred and Sixty Six Pounds 13/4 (£2166.13/4) being final instalment (£1666.13.4) for Felix Holt and £500 final instalment for the ten years copyright of Adam Bede and the other Novels as agreed.
The new edition of the Novels, I am sorry to say, is not selling as I calculated upon at all. The sale in numbers is a failure, but in the volume of Adam we have sold about 3000, and I think it is going on steadily. I fear however that there is no chance whatever of the payment contingent to you on the sale of a certain number of this present edition becoming due, which is a disappointment and loss to us both. Believe me, Dear Madam
always yours truly
John Blackwood.
Mrs. Lewes.
