My dear Mrs. Lewes
Your letter last week gave me real pleasure. I rejoice to think of you getting out to walk in the quiet lanes beyond the houses and I had sat down to write congratulating you on our having some return of the spring at last when the snow began to batter against the windows again and we have had it more or less with us ever since.
I wrote to Mr. Harper last Wednesday and I hope I may prove a successful negotiator. I sent him the contents to show the nature of the book and a leaf to show him the size and number of pages. On looking at the motto again I found it so appropriate that I wish I had sent it to him, but it can follow and I have been trying its effect on the title page. I shall send it to you in a day or two also note stating when we received the M.S.
This return of winter has made me feel rather out of sorts for the last few days but in spite of the east winds I took a long walk yesterday afternoon with my doctor and he congratulated me most heartily upon the state of my pulses after the exertion.
Thanks for your valuable message to Julian Sturgis which I shall convey to him in some form as he is a fine fellow and will be highly gratified, being a devoted worshipper of yours. My nephew has been paying a visit in Derbyshire for a few days, but I expect him home to-night. You will not I think be disappointed with Mr. Kinglake's volume. My son Jack is sitting with me busy reading some M.S. adventures in Australia which are very well told. He sends his respects. Believe me
