My Dear Madam
I have the pleasure of inclosing an order for £1666.13.4d in favour of Mr. Lewes being the first instalment for Felix Holt in terms of our agreement. The book has not sold to the extent that I expected, 549 but it has done well and the public have amply confirmed the opinion I formed on reading the M.S. that in Felix Holt your genius had achieved another triumph and a great one.
We printed 5250 copies and there are still a few hundred left, but as only 35 and 25 were disposed of in October and November respectively we have published the second edition at 12/. 550 It has not done much as yet.
My nephew joins me in best remembrances to Mr. Lewes and you, and believe me
always yours truly

I intended to have written another letter along with this about the cheap illustrated edition of your works, but I have been so much interrupted that I could not make it out. I shall do so tomorrow however.
