My Dear Sir
I have the pleasure of inclosing a cheque £120 being the first instalment for the reprint of Clerical Scenes, and from the state of the sales I think the other payment for the edition will be at your service when you wish it. I have not heard lately from London about the book from which I infer that there is no particular movement, but I fancy the sale must be towards 800.
After the fine start I thought we should have got through the edition at once, but there is no call to feel disappointed. On the contrary the sale is a good sale and you will recollect that when we proposed to reprint my impression was that the series had not lasted long enough in the Magazine to give you a hold on the general public although long enough to make your literary reputation. Unless in exceptional cases, a very long time often elapses between these two stages of reputation -- the literary and the public. Your progress will be sure if not so quick as one could wish.
How does the new Tale get on? Is it at all in such a state that you could send me a portion to read? I feel a very warm interest in it on your account as also partly on my own. Tell Lewes that I got his M.S. and will write him in a day or two with proof.
