Sandfontein | June 14th 1871.
Dear Pater
Many thanks for the £200. which I received quite safe on the 22nd of last month. I hope I shall make better use of it than the money I have had before. It has just come in nice time. On the 25th of May I was married. We rode to Newcastle, in the morning, and were married quietly at 10 o'clock, had luncheon and returned the same day. 56 miles in one day is not bad. Is it? I shifted from Assagai about a month ago, and on Saturday I expect to take Eliza to Kalbasfontein to live. Jacob has been very hard at work, and built a small house with 2 rooms. In a couple of months I expect to have a 4 room house finished. I shall buy as many sheep as I can in September and if you send me the other £100. I shall lay it also out in sheep. I can't buy any sheep just now because I have no Kraals built and it is not safe to leave sheep out in the night. I have been staying at Sandfontein with my wife for the last Fortnight. The old folks are reconciled now, the quarrel has been made up. It is no use of us to be on unfriendly terms with them. I hope you will excuse this short letter. I have no news at all to tell. My wife and I are quite well. We both send our love to all at home.
I remain
Your affectionate son
H. A. Lewes.
