My dear Pater
I had thought you had quite forgotten me, it is so long since I last heard from you. I have written to you and the little Mutter twice, and once to
Charles and have not yet received any answer. I have been very busy riding timber, I have had to work the whole winter to make up for not doing any thing in the summer as I had to stop at home to nurse Eliza. I got a span of young oxen to brake in from my Landlord J. O'Neil. I have the use of them for one year. Ten of them I have broken in, I have two more and then my span is complete. If I can manage it I intend to ride with two wagons this summer, as I have two spans of oxen. This month and next I have to stop at home and attend to the sheep. They have commenced lambing, we have 8, at present. I don't know how many we shall have this year. I will let you know in my next.
When the Cows left off giving milk, at the commencement of the winter we bought two Goats, to milk for Marian. She has thriven very well on Goats milk. She is a lively little darling and so good. She is now 9 months old, and has two teeth and can say Mamma and papa. We shall be very glad indeed to receive a Box of Books, as we have read all the last, that you sent. If you address the Box to Mr. J. Brickhill Natal Bank Durban that will do, he will then forward it on to me. I have been troubled for the two last months with chronic rheumatism which gives me a great deal of pain. We hope the trip to France will quite recruit the little Mutter and yourself.
