My dear Willie
Our letters crossed each other. The cover for the Birthday Book is startling and ornate, but we suppose adapted to the bookseller mind, and the mind of the idiots who buy birthday books!
The report of sales is very satisfactory -- at least the sales of the old books and early volumes of the Cabinet Edition -- there is however a sad falling off in the latter volumes. Why -- for I presume you had a reason -- did you not give the name of the volume last published, only mentioning "Cabinet Edition volume" -- whatever it was? The inattention and stupidity of the advertisement readers can never be exaggerated -- for them everything should be stated with utmost explicitness.
How strange that only 1 copy of Spanish Gypsy should be sold when 82 of Jubal went! I suppose the edition of Jubal is now running out, but you won't print many copies more before the Cabinet volume is ready.
Gout unabated. But the weather is delicious and Mrs. Lewes, -- who begs me to add her kind regards -- is certainly better. A little more of this weather and peace!
