My dear Major
When I thought of 5/- I imagined a larger edition would be printed. I now think 6/- or 6/6 more prudent. The extra sum is little to the purchaser, but makes a great difference to us. But you are the best judge, and what you decide will be agreeable to me.
Herewith comes more m.s. of the Mill. But Mrs. Lewes (who begs me to say she has been not a little cheered by hearing of the interest Maggie excites in Edinburgh) makes a point of none of you reading any more of the book until you can go to the end, as this fragmentary mode of sipping the champagne allows the effervescence of interest to go off. Only two chapters more are to come; and they will come next week. Pray see that the printers are at "high pressure," since every day now that we are detained is a loss to us at Rome. We start the day after the last proof reaches -- that is, I hope, on Saturday week.
