My dear Major
I got back here yesterday and found your note with the pleasant German proposition. Brockhaus is one of the first of German houses, and gave me 50 £ for the English reprint of [The Life of Goethe]; but enquiries must be made (I will make them) as to what sum will be likely to be given for the C.S. 1181
I hope to see Mr. Simpson 1182 one day next week.
Among the packets awaiting me I found several pamphlets from Mr. Lawes of Rothamstead 1183 -- sent of course on account of the articles on [Food and Drink] but there was no letter -- Did they come through your house and did he write to you about them?
We have vastly enjoyed our trip, and have brought back a goodly heap of M.S. -- I shall take a packet containing a portion of the Bedesman to Mr. Langford next week.
A great many letters have come about "Seaside Studies" and I hope after all the book may make its way.
