My dear Major
If I did not return Trubner's letter it must have been destroyed, for I cannot find it.
Enclosed is the proof; pray let me see a revise. It was my rough draft I sent down to you and I did not expect to see it set up in type.
'c0propos of announcements will you give my compliments to Mr. Simpson and request him to humor me in two points. to printing name as George Henry without the Esq. -- or else as G. H. Lewes. I "can't abide" the George H.
To say author of "Seaside Studies," "Life of Goethe" etc. -- because if any "author" is to be in question I like to put my best leg foremost and not only is Goethe my best book but the mention of it is giving the book the advantage of the advertisement.
There is a third point connected with this same advertizing business, namely that I am not the "author" of the Illustrations to Seaside Studies but only to three or four figures thereof; ergo "illustrations by the author" should not appear.
If he thinks me fastidious let him reflect what the race of authors is!
