My dear Sir
Many thanks for the very acceptable papers, 400 which I found here on my return, and which I have read with great interest. The details I can only accept, having no direct knowledge -- except respecting the Hydra, in which you have anticipated what I was going to say. The conclusions are very similar to those I advocated in my book -- except as regards the "individual" in which I can by no means agree. I was struck with the similarity of your observations with those of Leuckart in his admirable little book just published.
The publisher has sent me some copies of the translation of the Life of Goethe. 401 As you are so familiar with German I will ask you to accept of one -- not having an original to offer. It may be worth its room for reference to dates etc.
Believe me, very dear Sir
Yours very truly
