My dear Sir John
The m.s. you send 674 has much interest but is a little unshapely. Considering the importance of the subject and the attention it will attract I think it would be well worth your while to expend some trouble in rewriting it from beginning to end, shaping it into a more effective whole, and throwing in, if possible, more personal touches. The anecdotes are certain to be largely quoted. If you can let me have it on Wednesday next it will be in time for you to see proofs.
Pray do not take any notice of what our chroniqueur may have said. 675 What is wanted is your view of Palmerston, and not an accommodation of your view to that of others. I believe that if you choose to take the requisite pains with the article it will make a sensation.
