My dear Lytton
Yes indeed I got your last sad note (inclosing the charming letter from Villers) and its contents saddened both of us more than I can tell you. 38 We have been anxiously expecting to hear from you, scarcely daring to hope for good news, and your note just arrived is most welcome though it might have been more cheering. Let us hear soon how all goes on. That dear boy's image haunts us in these green solitudes. And the image of his poor mother too! We had such a terrible experience with our six months watching of Thornie that any suggestion of such a scene is exaggerated for us.
Enclosed is a scrawl for Villers in answer to his amusing fragment which I hope will be concluded some day.
We have had rather warmer weather of late and Mrs. Lewes seems to profit by it. When the severity of summer has passed I hope she will flourish.
