My dear Lytton
We have been here ten days almost torn to pieces by the kind people and propose transferring les restes to Vienna on the 5th where we hope for more quiet and a better hotel. This hotel is aristocratic in the worst sense. On every staircase you rub coats with an Excellency and no other excellences can you by the best efforts of imagination discover. It is dirty, ill waited, and the food indifferent. But we can't move partly because all our friends would have to be informed and partly because the Berlin hotels have a bad reputation and we might fare no better. To avoid if possible a similar mistake in choice at Vienna, I write to you to ask if you know of a quiet, good hotel, -- where English and Americans are scarce would be preferred, but as we take our meals in our own rooms that is of less consequence than if we were liable to meet them at dinner. You may not have had any experience of Vienna hotels but if you have give us the benefit. Address poste restante, Prague (where we shall probably be on the 6th) unless your letter would reach us here by the morning of the 5th. 898
One great object in coming to Vienna is to see your friend Meynert and discuss gehirnbau with him. Another is to enjoy a little repose and see what is to be seen without fatigue.
I say nothing about seeing more of Mrs. Lytton and making my wife acquainted with her -- that you will need no mention of.
