Dear Sir
Herewith I send you the Letterpress to Kaulbach 757 which I hope will meet with your approval. In composing it I have steadily borne in view the needs of an English (and for the most part uninstructed) public -- and have therefore supplied precisely that kind of information which I found by experiment necessary. I showed the plates to several people -- men and women who knew little or nothing of Goethe -- and directed by their inquiries -- I constructed the commentary.
It is therefore something wholly different from what I should have written for a German public or a public familiar with Goethe's works. I have added translations to the German passages, because otherwise the quotations would not have been illustrative.
Please acknowledge the receipt of this. And let me have Proofs at your convenience. Believe me
