Dear Friend
Knowing how you sympathize with me and rejoice in any pleasing tribute to Madonna I send you the North American Review which contains a review of D.D. 626 I consider it one of the very best that has appeared. When you have all done with it Johnnie or Emily may bring it back, as I shall keep it.
She is slowly mending, but only slowly. Dr. Clark has kindly instructed me in his methods of examination 627 and every morning I set to work and keep him informed of any variation in her state.
Is Gwen 628 perfect? and are your grandmaternal joys sufficient by their warmth to keep out this cold? Kiss that small person for us -- and the mother, too, who did not appear on Sunday as she was expected. And the other small person, how is she? and her mother? -- Hall gives no sign of her or himself -- but we don't attribute it to any bad motive!
We are going to the Beethoven quartetts tomorrow afternoon, to Millais's and the concert on Friday evening, and Saturday concert again 629 -- so you see our stony troubles don't confine us to the house. Yesterday she took her first walk. Love to all
