Dear Mrs. Lankester 432
I am sure that you desire that I should be perfectly open with you. Mrs. Lewes's strength and time are already so severely tasked by visitors that we have constantly to decline proposals of friends to introduce their relatives and friends, and of strangers to introduce themselves -- it is our only safeguard; without it our rooms would not contain the visitors. From all she had heard of you she had formed such a respect for you that she at once acceded to your desire to see her; but you will understand why I beg you not to extend the invitation beyond yourself; and I am sure you would rather be frankly told the reason.
