My dear Sir
Your letter has been forwarded to us in our retreat from the turmoil of London. Respecting your friend's proposal I can say little or nothing. Mrs. Lewes does not engage for unwritten or unprojected works, not keeping a manufactory of novels on which she could relie. But as it is quite possible that she may at some future time write another novel there would be no harm in your friend making his proposition, that you might have it before you in case of there being any work to sell.
All I would beg him to understand is that Mrs. Lewes neither undertakes to write again, nor affixes any time, nor that she would give any answer to any proposition now made for so contingent a transaction. It would be understood on both sides as merely a proposition en l'air serving as a memorandum for future guidance.
