Friday.
Dear Barbara
I went yesterday to see dear old Owen 5 and found him better, but still lumbaginous. This weather Hastings must be delightful and I hope you will paint "much sea" and "much well."
Polly is ailing and rheumatic. Your's truly was upset by the small crossing and has had two days headache in consequence but is jolly again and hard at work on his "Problems."
How I should enjoy broaching some of the conclusions of those Problems at a serious tea such as Miss Edwards describes! Talk of a scourge! Imagine the virtuous faces elongated and paled beyond recovery from Souchong, and the vaticinations as to my future prospect (especially temperature).
Bessy 6 came and sat some time with Polly on Saturday. I did not put in an appearance. Tuesday we lunched with the Howards 7 who expressed great pleasure at the idea of meeting Daubigny -- so bear it in mind.
Polly would send her love if she knew I was writing.
