Dear Sirs
There are two matters on which I have to write to you, the first being urgent; the second one you can turn over in your minds at leisure.
Mrs. Lewes is going to publish in Macmillan for June, a drama in three scenes, running to upwards of 1,000 verses. The subject is one likely to be generally popular. We want £100 for the early sheets -- the poem to appear in America in June -- and of course we give you the first refusal. As there is no time to be lost, will you cable to me a Yes, or No on this point. 264 We should postpone publication till July in order to make our arrangement elsewhere, in case you do not accept it.
Mrs. Lewes sees her way to finishing her new novel by this autumn. It is a story of English provincial life -- time 1830 -- and will be in three volumes.
When I had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Ticknor last we had some conversation respecting possible modes of anticipating the English publication without risk, but I should like when you have looked at the matter from all sides, to hear what arrangement you would propose. There is however no hurry on this head. It is only respecting the dramatic poem that I ask you to answer without delay. Believe me Dear Sirs
