My dear Lord Houghton
Mrs. Lewes is at present unable to write, being confined to her bed; and although I have no reason to suppose she would not be well enough on Saturday to accept your kind invitation yet as she may be still disabled, and it would not do to leave two gaps in your party which might so well be filled up, I had perhaps better take the safe side and ask you to excuse us.
