My dear Lord
Your article 729 seems to me even better on a second than on a first reading; but I observe with dismay that it is twice as long as our usual limit, and as I think the effect would be greatly diminished by dividing the paper into two, I have gone over it with a view of reducing it in one or two less important passages. These I have marked with a pencil on the accompanying proof. If you agree with me that they can be omitted without injury, I will disregard the length to which the paper will even then extend and publish it all at once. But as we have only 128 pages in each number obviously 41 cannot be given to a single article without sacrificing variety in the review. I should wish you to be guided in this matter solely by your own preference either for one article (abridged) or for two. Believe me, my dear Lord,
Your lordship's faithful servant
G. H. Lewes.
