My dear Sir
On Wednesday at 3 I will do myself the pleasure of calling on you to speak about the Hist. of Philosophy.
To my amazement I learned from the publisher that 40,000 copies of the work have been sold from first to last. Only about 150 copies remain in Clowes' hands and a few more in the hands of secondhand booksellers, which were bought at the sale two years ago. Mr. Cox says that his 150 will be sold long before I can produce a new edition; the demand being constant.
Surely 40,000 copies is quite an unprecedented sale? I did not think half that number had gone. It has given me the greatest confidence; because my new edition will be in all respects a new book -- much enlarged in matter and much improved in manner.
