My dear Nephew
From aunt and self all good wishes rest upon the new Firm! 310 I won't say may you get your deserts as that may be a whipping; but may you be as prosperous as rational desires can prefigure!
I wish I could give better accounts of Madonna; but this low lying Thames Valley is decidedly enervating, and added to her depression of spirits, it has counteracted even the splendid weather we have had of late. We shall only stay one day in town and then start for the Welsh Mountains. Perhaps their bracing air (and complete idleness) may set her up for the winter. Nor can I give much better accounts of your's truly. Our life is so unvaried here that there is absolutely nothing to write about except health! Yes, by the way, there was one variety the other day in the escape from what might have been a serious accident. Madonna was coming to meet me at the Watford Station on my return from town, 311 when a runaway horse in a brewer's cart, dashed up against ours -- broke our shaft and strained the springs but did no other damage! When I learned about it you can imagine "the turn" it gave me. Madonna was perfectly calm throughout, and not really frightened.
It is sad to hear of dear Emily not getting strong again. Why is love so little therapeutic? and why are nice people so seldom strong?
Charles and Gertrude are at St. Moritz and write rapturously of the Engadine and the weather. Our dearest love to all
