My dear Sir
Our friend Miss Evans has spoken of you in such terms that I should be very glad if our mutual interests could establish an arrangement. I have three boys, from the ages of thirteen downwards, whom I should like to place under your care. But I should warn you that my project is to take the two elder boys to Germany in about another year, if my means admit of it, so that it is very possible their stay with you would be shorter than would enable you to do full justice to yourself. If however you are not indisposed to take them with that contingency, and if the terms which would remunerate you are such as a literary man, who has to look closely to his expenditure, can afford to pay, it would be gratifying to me to know my boys were in such excellent hands.
The two eldest are at present at the Bayswater Grammar School. 286 The youngest is at home 287 and is very backward, because for some years his health was delicate, and I did not like his being at school. The elder boys are clever, and eager to get on. They are already tolerably grounded in Latin, and French, and have commenced German.
