My dear Dennis 707
If any expression of my belief in your scrupulous conscientiousness and punctuality in discharge of all duties devolving on you can be of assistance to you as a candidate for the editorship of the periodical you speak of I shall be happy to give it. I set my face against testimonials in general, because they are commonly insincere, and are mostly written without any knowledge of the qualifications of the candidate. But I have had you assisting me in the [Fortnightly Review] so long and with such entire satisfaction that I do not hesitate to express my belief in your doing well whatever you undertake. Let me recal the fact that when you were appointed subeditor of the Review, it was with the distinct understanding that unless I found you thoroughly efficient the engagement was to terminate at once. So satisfied have I been that I should greatly regret losing your services, though of course I would not for a moment stand in the way of your taking a more advantageous position.
