GHL to John Chapman, London, [1 February 1854]
MS: Col. Richard Gimbel. Endorsed: G. H. Lewes Feby 1, 1854. Hitherto unpublished.
My dear Chapman
Herewith I return you the volume of the Cyclo. of Anatomy you were good enough to lend me. As I borrowed it for purposes of "Development," the returning it presents a good opportunity for asking you whether you still wish the article to appear in the West. Rev. 432
After the expressions in reference to me in the last number, 433 I cannot think of your being in any way bound by previous engagements and must place myself in the condition of one now for the first time offering such an article. Consider it so. Erase the past, and consider the proposal as now made and let me have your answer.
Yours truly
G. H. Lewes.
John Chapman Esq.
