My dear Blackwood
Proofs of the "Mill" go by this post, and the first day I go into town I will take the m.s. of volume 2. The first proofs read delightfully tempting I think; and Mrs. Lewes strengthened and encouraged by your letter thinks so too. There never was so diffident and desponding an author, since the craft first began! -- By the way -- you ought to know -- who was the first author? and who reviewed him? and what did his copyright fetch?
I also send proof of "Physiology" and the final chapter with Preface. How will you manage the preface in those sets when the first volume has already been sold? I feel a pang at parting with this work, although I can't help rejoicing at the thought of its being safely brought to an end. It has occupied two years -- not to mention the previous years of preparation.
Sir Edward has not given any intimation of himself. Probably he has forgotten all about it.
The dedication was gratifying but one can't paragraph it.
The story of the "Mill" gets more intensely interesting with every chapter and the third volume is a novel in itself. Mrs. Lewes begs her kind regards to be sent to you and the Major, and believe me
