My dear Blackwood
The checque arrived yesterday while I was in town. Many thanks. But you make me uncomfortable about your printers shouting for copy. More than a fortnight ago I sent back the revise of Digestion and Indigestion, which will appear in May. The two next parts in revise have also been sent to me, and I return one by this post. Is it possible that you have not received Digestion? I should be much obliged to Mr. Simpson if he would keep me regularly informed respecting the progress and wants of copy and proofs. I won't be behind hand; but I like to retain copy and proofs as late as possible in order that the book may have the benefit of the very latest discoveries, or revision. The whole m.s. is done; but is constantly being altered, and added to; and this will be the case as long as there is a chance left.
I am exceedingly happy to find that the book is producing an impression among eminent medical men, and that the articles in Maga were much talked of, and have been quoted by the profession. This must affect the general public. If we can secure a reputation sale will inevitably follow.
A letter from Algiers today 449 informs us that "there is a work which seems to have convulsed English society" (of the higher class) and accordingly it has been sent for by our correspondent. She says it is "Adam Bede." Do you know of such a book?
