My dear Blackwood
Proof goes to Edinburgh by this post. Of course you have seen that Blackguard Newby's advertisement? 362 What can be done? From two people who spoke to me on Saturday I learned that one concluded Adam Bede Junior was by George Eliot and the other by Liggins. These ideas will of course obtain currency in the provinces, and will damage the next work. As the title of Adam Bede is copyright, and as no one can have a right to publish a sequel to a living author's work surely Newby might be stopped by a letter threatening legal proceedings? At all events it ought to be tried. Do see to this matter at once. Newby must either give up the publication altogether or he must announce the name of the real author of his book and state that it is not G. Eliot. In haste, and hot indignation
