My dear Blackwood
We came back last night, driven from Switzerland and warned off Holland by the intense heat. Except the sight of the boys, and the beauty of Lucerne, the trip was not worth the fatigue and time and money. The weather was such as Sydney Smith declared would drive one to take off one's skin and sit in one's bones. 214
Among the pile of letters were two from you, pleasant as usual, with the checques, and a thrilling prospect of a Pug.
Don't call my dear Jane Austen old Sarah -- how would you like to be called Jim? 215
Respecting Owen I forgot to say that I had given up the idea. I haven't the requisite knowledge for such an article. But if you like I will write a paper on his new Classification of Mammalia 216 -- that is to say a paper on Classification generally 'e0propos of his new book published by Parker (send it me) in which I can say something generally of his labors. But the first paper I do must be on the Voluntary and Involuntary Actions, as I shall want that for the Physiology.

Paris is in a fever about Adam Bede. Even at Hofwyl -- five miles from Berne -- with only half a dozen English boys -- I heard of it; for on telling my second son I had brought him a novel all three shouted "Is it Adam Bede?" 217
In spite of the fatigues of the journey Mrs. Lewes feels greatly benefited by the trip, and will rock the cradle of the new "little stranger" with fresh maternal vigour.
