My dear Blackwood
The proof dispatched to-day is ready for press. I don't need to see a revise, so that Mr. Simpson, if he wishes it, may be out at the beginning of the month.
I had the first part of the German translation by Prof. Carus yesterday: it looks very tempting in teutonic type, and the translation seems admirable from what I have read. But of course the honor of having so eminent a translator would make one inclined to be indulgent even were the translation inferior.
Mrs. Lewes wishes me to ask you to send duplicates of the next batch of proofs -- those of the opening of volume 2 -- to Mr. Sheard | 3 Cloak Lane | Cannon St. | he having promised to see that her law is all right. She is as fidgety about minute accuracy as if she were on oath.
We are reading Oliphant's book 482 and are greatly interested by his account of the Japanese, though not a little indignant with the gratuitous disregard of feelings, prejudices, and rights displayed by the English in the Chinese quarrel. Even on Oliphant's showing 'tis a deplorable case -- such as between man and man would excite universal reprobation.
Maggie is coming rapidly to grief.
