My dear Blackwood
I hope the paragraph to which you refer, 393 but which I have not seen, and only heard of accidentally, (it was probably the good office of some friend) has stopped the blackguard. Not having heard from you after you said you were to consult your legal friends, I concluded that you were taking some active measures, and would let me know the result.
Langford tells me the Clerical Scenes are all gone. We must see about a new edition in time for Christmas. I presume you do not contemplate another at 12/. Ought it to be 7/6 or 6/? and how many would it be prudent to print?
I am correcting Seaside Studies for the new edition. When do you propose issuing it? Are the plates copied? Shall we add "Only a Pond?" "These be questions!"
Maggie goes on gloriously and Mrs. Lewes does not suffer herself to be much bothered by external things. Pug grows in extenso, but not in intelligence. He is certainly not bound to be more fascinating than he is already.
What days these are for furious speculation in the periodical world! My precious time is occupied with declining offers on all sides -- every one imagining that he can seduce George Eliot, simply because he (the everyone, not G.E.) wants that result!
Mrs. Lewes begs me to add her kind remembrances to the Major and yourself and believe me
Ever faithfully yours
G. H. Lewes.
I have been unable to see Mr. Patterson yet, but I shall try today. Not that I can do anything for him.
