My dear Blackwood
I am disappointed with the subscription. I should have thought the booksellers would by this time have had more confidence in me, but probably they felt sceptical of my vitality in so new a direction as zoology, the more so as many trashy tank books have been published of late. However if the book be really a good one, as I believe, it will make its way when known; though I fear slowly.
My banker's balance has been seriously drained this month by the schooling account of my boys, and I should feel obliged by your sending me a checque. You must deduct therefrom the expense, whatever it may be, of that alteration I suggested, because the fault was wholly mine in making the statement, and in justice I ought to pay for the same.
I have sent Langford a list of some eminent names to whom the book may with effect be sent. G.E. of course is included among private friends -- he having as you may suppose been duly indoctrinated not to say overwhelmed by

Would it not be well to send one to Prof. Simpson -- and one or two leading men in Scotland?
