My Dear Blackwood
We were very pleased to hear your opinion of [Silas.] In spite of my delight in the book I cannot help occasionally being made dubious by her persistent depreciation of what she writes. It is in vain that I remember how she always has felt so about her writing -- in vain that I recal how pleased I have been on hearing it read -- a sort of doubt will overpower me; and when you come to my aid I rally again.
Herewith Spon[taneous] Comb[ustion]. 513 I shall finish Petherick in time for this number, and you can use it if you are in want of it, or let it stand over. I intend to give myself a holiday as soon as the book is over.
