My dear Blackwood
Are the charms of golf all engrossing or has your letter been tampered with by some inquisitive postman? This is the 20th and not having heard from you makes me dubious.
Willie will have told you that I have finished the paper on "Buckle's Scientific Errors" but detain it, till after your review of volume 2 appears. Mine is solely devoted to an expos'e9 of his blunders in science and doesn't touch any other point.
I am half way through a paper "Discoverers in Science: Marshall Hall," but my health continues so bad that I doubt whether I shall be able to finish it in time for this month. If you don't receive it by the 25th you may conclude I am not up to the scratch.
We dispatched Thornton to Switzerland this morning and the house will now resume its quiet, much to Mrs. Lewes's benefit. She allows herself to be preyed upon dreadfully by the boys -- she can't say No.
"The Book" is slowly crystallizing into what will be a magnificent programme. Until quite lately I thought she would relinquish altogether in despair, her singular diffidence being exaggerated in this case. But now I think it will really be written. If only I could see the first chapter!
What delicious weather! I long so to run away and be at rest on the coast.
