January 73.
Dear Blackwood
Your cheque for 143 £ arrived to-day and your very welcome acceptance of my proposal about the Key to all Mythologies. I didn't like the idea of going elsewhere, and although I felt that you John Blackwood were far too large minded to object to any difference of speculative view such as you could find in the Key, yet both Mrs. Lewes and myself had a sort of dread of Scotch friends and clients who would be metafeesically shocked at your giving your countenance to such heresies.
Let us see Collins's letter when you can lay your hands on it.
I begin to suspect that the Times is keeping back its review because it is so unfavorable that Delane thinks it will hurt the sale: 714 However if it should come out just before the new edition or just after it, that would be the best chance for it.
Ever yours
G. H. L.
