My dear Blackwood
The more we ponder your proposal the more we feel that a royalty is the most satisfactory arrangement for all parties. It is not that we are in any way dissatisfied with the sum you propose; but that we would rather be relieved from the sense that the arrangement might turn out disadvantageous to you; and also that we should like to have free command over editions and prices.
The Jews seem to be very grateful for Deronda -- and will perhaps make up for the deadness of so many Christians to that part of the book which does not directly concern Gwendolen. When the cheap edition is issued we shall perhaps see the effect of this Jewish sympathy. The Jews ought to make a good public -- as the doctors did for Middlemarch.
