My dear Blackwood
Your checque and agreeable letter arrived this morning. The sales are indeed satisfactory and promise for Deronda, who I suspect will have a much larger public. The Jews alone would constitute an energetic propagandist party, for never have they been idealized and realized so marvellously before.
Since I wrote Mrs. Lewes has been better. But 'tis a frail vessel of Venetian glass! Your amusing account of Stigand is just what might have been conceived. But I must tell you that I am far too deeply engrossed with nerve centers to pay attention to anything else -- my strength is small and it is all absorbed by my work. It is rarely I can even read Maga!
