Dear Blackwood
I send you such a letter as you may send to Tait and will put him in possession of what is asked of him. 171 The type and aspect are all that could be desired. Please ask Mr. Simpson to order the m. s. to be sent along with the proofs.
[Kenelm Chillingly] 172 arrived this morning. May it prosper! The Times notice was not a good one for those who read carefully; but the mass don't read, they glance.
Every American mail continues to bring gushing testimonies about Middlemarch. Mrs. Lewes is not the thing and longs for quiet and the country. On Sunday we had 23 at our gathering from 1.30 to 6.30. -- Darwin, Kinglake, Grant Duff, Clifford, Joachim, Roundell, Browning, and some [swells.] 173 We went to bed at 9!
We hope the new edition 174 continues in demand. Does not this delicious weather rejoice your heart? Kind regards to Willie.
